History
The Wakatipu Rugby Club was formed in 1953 with the amalgamation of the Queenstown, Arrowtown, Glenorchy and Remarkables rugby clubs who were all struggling at the time with player losses. Arrowtown left the merger to reform in 1989.
From these early beginnings to the 5 time championship winning teams of the 90’s Wakatipu has won is fair share of silverware over the years but one of the clubs proudest moments came over the 2004 - 2005 period where the team remained undefeated whilst winning back to back Otago County Titles (including all clubs from South Otago) along with the white horse cup.
With Queenstown being a popular winter tourist destination it is not uncommon for the team to be made up of locals along with visiting tourists who are working in Queenstown region for the Ski Season. This years premier team features local players along with players from, Canada, Ireland, England, Scotland, Spain and Australia.
Over the years the Wakatipu Rugby Club has grown to be one of the strongest clubs in the Central Otago Competition with a proud history that will continue into the future.
